The legend of Tortoise & The Hair Obx is a wild tale from the annals of beach folklore, where a comic shop like no other once thrived. Picture this: it was a haven for nerds, misfits, and die-hard comic aficionados, and its existence was as brief as a meteor streaking across the night sky. The Tortoise & Hair Comics and Games was like Animal House crashing into Monday Night Raw, with a dash of Eddie Murphy’s Raw comedy. It’s no wonder the shop didn’t last long, but as any true comic nerd knows, heroes never stay dead for too long. That’s why our logo rose from the ashes like a majestic Phoenix.
During the heyday of The Tortoise & Hair, the origins of our beloved Tortoise remained shrouded in mystery. He simply strolled out of the back office one day and declared himself the grandmaster of cool. Back then, we didn’t take his initial appearance too seriously because, frankly, he was a little light on the hair department. But after a bit of time (around 4:19 to 4:29, if you ask us), The Tortoise made a fateful decision, donning his signature outfit – Afro, Rasta Pick, and a stoic smile that could rival a sphinx’s. It was in that moment that the talented graphic designer Matt Arron captured his iconic likeness for all time.
